There are three ways to obtain a protective order:
- Represent yourself in the lawsuit; or
- Hire a private attorney; or
- Seek out a non-profit agency in town that provides FREE representation for protective orders.
Who provides FREE legal assistance for protective orders?
- The Travis County Attorney’s Office, Family Violence Division
- Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA)
- Texas Advocacy Project (TAP)
- The University of Texas, Domestic Violence Clinic
(Available seasonally during the academic year)
How do I apply for a Protective Order at the Travis County Attorney’s Office?
As part of ongoing public efforts to address the spread of COVID-19 and in keeping with recommendations by health officials, we are accepting applications for protective orders through phone screenings only. Please call 512-854-4163 to obtain a protective order. If necessary to leave a message, please include your name and date of birth, as well as the name and date of birth of the person you are applying against, and a phone number or email address we can safely contact you. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
What do I need with me to apply for a Protective Order?
These items are REQUIRED:
- A valid government issued ID (Driver’s license, Military ID, etc.)
- A current and valid address for the person that you need to have stay away from you.
These items are helpful:
- Copies of divorce and/or custody agreements
- Social security number of your child(ren)
- Names & addresses of your child(ren)’s school
- CPS caseworker and/or case number
